About Madrid
The city
Madrid, the capital of Spain in the centre of the country, is a city of elegant boulevards and expansive, manicured parks such as the Buen Retiro. While Madrid boasts modern infrastructures, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighbourhoods and streets.
Madrid is the European city with the largest number of trees and green surface per inhabitant.
As an industrial centre, Madrid benefits from having excellent infrastructures, from being a transport hub, and as the seat of many companies. Industries based on advanced technology are acquiring much more importance here than in the rest of Spain.
Commuting and other local journeys can be done on a high-capacity metropolitan road network and a world-class public transport system.
Regarding long-distance transport, Madrid is the central node of the system of the intercity road network and the high-speed railway network (AVE), which has brought major cities such as Seville and Barcelona to within 2.5 hours of travel time. Madrid-Barajas Airport, is the fourth largest airport in Europe. Its central location makes it a major logistical base.
